It was time for another show, Harvey is just like Wagin not as big as the Royal but you still get a lot of attractions and more interested on goers. Harvey's main attraction is the amount of Dairy Cattle, with over 70 entries there were loads of dairy cattle and it was very interesting watching how they were shown.
So on Friday the 24th we got all the cattle up and haltered, ready for Saturday morning. The next morning we picked up our helper for the weekend Amy Neave and headed up to the Upper Swan farm. Once there Chris had already clipped and tidied up the cattle and before we new it we were loading all the luggage onto the Ute and all the cattle into the trailer.
This Harvey we decided to take three heifers, one cow and calf and two junior bulls. It was a two hour drive down there and once we arrived we went straight into washing them, heifers first they are never really dirty so a quick wash n blow and they had there head in there feed buckets straight away! Next was the cow and calf, that calf was quite dirty and grubby. Also he would not keep still, Amy and myself had to both clean him and we still struggled. Lastly were the bulls the youngest bull was clean and looking great in no time, the older one took a little more scrubbing but we got him sparkling before the end of the afternoon.
We gave them all feed and water, fluffed up their beds and went and prepped our swags!
Harvey held a sausage sizzle for us and we were all excited to sit down enjoy some good sausages plus having a chat with other cattle handlers/breeders that attended Harvey. Thank you Harvey for holding such a great BBQ and for always being friendly towards everyone! After the dinner we checked on the cattle, made sure neck ropes were on and the beds were clean and we all headed to bed ourselves.
The next morning Russell and myself woke at 5:30am and checked on the cattle straight away, we cleaned out there beds and gave them water. This day was judging day so we kept combing of the cattle and making them look presentable for the judging ring, the judging at Harvey was set up differently to Wagin, at Harvey there was three Categories British, Compact and European. The three categories then had classes junior female, senior female, junior male and senior male,
British is breeds : Herefords, Angus, Murray Grey,Shorthorn
Compact is breeds : Dexters, Square Meters, Miniature Herefords.
European is breeds like: - Charolais, Simmental
We went into the ring around 10:30am and the first class was Junior Bulls. Russell took Glenwarlock Krom and I took Glenwarlock Kayne we both went up against a junior Square meter bull. The square meter came first, Glenwarlock Kayne second and Glenwarlock Krom third.
Straight after the bulls was junior female Amy took Glenwarlock Khalessi, Russell took Glenwarlock Kiki and I took Billabong Kazam. The judge made us walk a lap around the ring then he watched them walk towards him and away, after he lined us up in a row with Kazam in first + Champion Compact Junior Female, Khalessi in second and Kiki in third!
We next had the cow and calf class, were Russell took Gigi and Amy took the calf K.Maurice. She was the only entry so she received first place and Champion Compact Senior Female.
The European Category was being judged but after they finished all our first place winners had to go back into the ring for interbreed. So Glenwarlock Gigi went into the ring for Interbreed Senior Female against a speckle park and Black Angus which won the Senior Cow Interbreed.
Next we took Billabong Kazam into the ring to go in the Junior Female interbreed, she went up against a Murray Grey and Charolais. The Murray Grey won the the Junior Female Interbreed but the judge said that our little heifer was an exceptional Dexter heifer and was very close to being winning.
After hearing that we were so happy and proud of our little heifer she may not have won but she got noticed and appreciated!
After all the judging was over we fed up and let the cattle have an afternoon nap until it was time to load up the trailer and Ute and head of home.
Harvey was brilliant this year and it always has been, thank you to Harvey show ground for holding a brilliant show and thank you to all the other breeds and competitors for making the show fun and a great time!
